About

I'm a PhD Candidate in Media & Information Studies at Michigan State University. This fall, I will be moving to Maryland's iSchool (ischool.umd.edu) as an Assistant Professor.

Broadly, my research interests focus on examining the impact of communication technologies on self-presentation and relationship maintenance strategies, specifically through the use of social media. My dissertation focuses on the impact of SNS users' social network composition and privacy behaviors on their use of the site, with a focus on the impact of context collapse, or the flattening of users' many distinct audiences into a singular group (i.e., "Facebook Friends").

At MSU, I work primarily with Drs. Nicole Ellison and Cliff Lampe to study a number of positive outcomes associated with use of social network sites such as Facebook. I am currently working on a NSF-funded grant (#0916019) to study how SNSs facilitate collaborative processes. I have also completed a number of studies examining social capital outcomes and am currently working on a large study focused on the use of SNSs for information-seeking purposes. See my Papers section for more details on my published research.

Prior to beginning my PhD, I received my master's degree from Georgetown University, where I studied in the Communication, Culture, and Technology department. I also spent three years at the Pew Internet Project as a researcher and consultant.
