The Zon Project: Creating a Virtual Environment for Learning Chinese Language and Culture
authored with Mete Akcaoğlu; presented at E-Learn 2009
The Zon Project is building a multi-user, game-based virtual environment to support learning Chinese language and culture. From its core, Zon is designed to be a multiplayer, online environment facilitating learning through gameplay. A goal of the project is to address issues hampering foreign language instruction, including the need for high quality feedback and participation in persistent environments. Being web-based, Zon provides real-time, on-demand connection to interactive learning activities and authentic cultural information. The game provides the opportunity for players to learn from non-player characters, responsive game agents, and other players.

Designing for Community: Understanding Sense of Community in Virtual Learning Environments
presented at AERA 2009
As researchers and developers continue to push the boundaries of virtual learning environments, one theme in the design of these online spaces remains consistent: how to support learning communities in virtual environments. This paper focuses on the creation of a theoretical framework for understanding an individual’s sense of community as central to these virtual environments. This conceptual and operational framework can assist researchers as they investigate online learning environments and developers as they design virtual learning environments that build on an individual sense of community.
